She began her political career in 1978 as chair of the San Mateo Democratic Party, then became president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in 1986, and was voted a member of Congress in 1992. SShe is an ardent supporter of gay rights, progressive immigration laws, and more comprehensive public health systems. However, she is best known for her work encouraging and improving technology for her constituents. As co-chair of the Congressional Internet Caucus, she works with many Silicon Valley companies to educate Congress members about the Internet, and encourage neutrality and freedom on the Internet.
