How are teachers attacking the achievement gap? Greg Kellerman and three colleagues at Sheppard Middle School are using a Silicon Valley Education Grant to run a Saturday School for a targeted group of 7th grade Hispanic students who need extra help in math and language arts. The students will spend 18 hours over 6 Saturdays with their teachers using special strategies and resources to increase student proficiency and ultimately raising their test scores on the California Standards Tests in the spring. “Lessons will be planned lovingly and with student interests and fun in mind, rather than a scripted program and we will focus on teaching at a time of day when research says students of this age group are most likely to be productive in learning.” Kellerman said.
