State Superintendent Jack
O’Connell was elected to a second four-year term as State Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2006.
As chief of California’s public school system and leader of the California Department of Education,
Superintendent O'Connell has focused on closing the achievement gap and preparing students for a rapidly changing
global economy by holding high standards for all students. He is a strong supporter and facilitator of
partnerships between schools, businesses, communities, and philanthropies in order to engage students with
challenging, real-world education experiences. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from California
State University (CSU), Fullerton and earned his secondary teaching credential from CSU, Long Beach.
Senator Abel
Maldonado started his career in public office at the age of 26 when he served on Santa Maria City
Council. Since then Maldonado has served as mayor of Santa Maria and as a member of the California State
Assembly. During his Assembly tenure, he led the charge to see seat belts in school buses, aided in the reform of
the California Workers Compensation System and fought for legislation to raise academic performance in schools.
Abel attended CSU Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, where he majored in Crop Science. After college, he applied his
education to his family farm and has seen the farm grow from a half acre of strawberries to a successful business
of over 6,000 acres and 250 employees.
Join SVEF for this exciting townhall meeting with State Superintendent Jack O’Connell and State Senator Abel Maldonado. They will be addressing critical issues concerning California classrooms such as the integration of Career Technical Education and closing our students’ achievement gap. This is your opportunity to help shape the future of public education in California.
