Dr. Martha Kanter is currently undergoing U.S. Senate confirmation hearings to be President Obama's Undersecretary of Education nominee reporting to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Until recently, she was Chancellor of Foothill-DeAnza Community College District, one of the most prominent community college districts in the nation. Kanter holds a doctorate in organization and leadership from the University of San Francisco, and a master's degree in education with a concentration in clinical psychology and public practice from Harvard University.

This event will incorporate aspects of a baseball game with the elements of a classroom. Students will have an opportunity to participate in educational pre-game activities, and all participating schools will have the option to utilize a curriculum guide that has been adapted to meet the requirements of the California Academic Content Standards, and contains lesson plans for teachers.

At a time when the need for a workforce with strong skills in math and science continues to grow, not enough of our students are graduating in these fields. This forum will examine the need to improve math and science education, will discuss the math and science achievement gap, and will describe solutions for addressing this social problem. Leaders from the private sector, academia, and the education community will analyze this issue, and discuss approaches to addressing this challenge.

State Superintendent Jack
O’Connell was elected to a second four-year term as State Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2006.
As chief of California’s public school system and leader of the California Department of Education,
Superintendent O'Connell has focused on closing the achievement gap and preparing students for a rapidly changing
global economy by holding high standards for all students. He is a strong supporter and facilitator of
partnerships between schools, businesses, communities, and philanthropies in order to engage students with
challenging, real-world education experiences. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from California
State University (CSU), Fullerton and earned his secondary teaching credential from CSU, Long Beach.
Senator Abel
Maldonado started his career in public office at the age of 26 when he served on Santa Maria City
Council. Since then Maldonado has served as mayor of Santa Maria and as a member of the California State
Assembly. During his Assembly tenure, he led the charge to see seat belts in school buses, aided in the reform of
the California Workers Compensation System and fought for legislation to raise academic performance in schools.
Abel attended CSU Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, where he majored in Crop Science. After college, he applied his
education to his family farm and has seen the farm grow from a half acre of strawberries to a successful business
of over 6,000 acres and 250 employees.

Alberto Ibargüen is the current President, CEO
and Trustee of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. His career in journalism has spanned over 20
years with experience as a publisher for the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald and as a newspaper executive for
The Hartford Courant, Newsday and Knight Ridder. The Knight Foundation is responsible for granting more
than $90 million annually. Amongst the many civic and educational boards he serves on, Ibargüen is
currently on the board of directors for PepsiCo, the Council of Foreign Relations and chairman of the board for
the Newseum in Washington, D.C. He is a graduate of Wesleyan University and Pennsylvania Law
School.
Bruce Chizen has served as the CEO of Adobe
Systems, Inc. since 2000. During his tenure, Adobe has exceeded doubling its revenue and is revered as a
considerable power in the software industry. In 2006, Adobe gave over $6 million cash grants to over 130
community and educational organizations worldwide. In the same year, over $7 million was donated to The
Silicon Valley Community Foundation through the Adobe Foundation Fund. Chizen serves on the board of
directors of organizations such as Synopsys, Inc. and the Public Broadcasting System Foundation. He has a
bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College, City University of New York.
Michael W. Kirst is Professor Emeritus of Education and Business Administration at
Stanford University since 1969. Dr. Kirst received his Ph.D. in political economy and government from Harvard.
Before joining the Stanford University faculty, Dr. Kirst held several positions with the federal government,
including Staff Director of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Manpower, Employment and Poverty. He was also a
former president of the California State Board of Education. His book From High School to College with Andrea
Venezia was published by Jossey Bass in 2004.
Mike O’Farrell spent more than 20 years with Applied
Materials, Inc. before retiring in January 2007. In his more than six years as Vice President of Global
Community Affairs, O’Farrell’s leadership produced global impact through the company’s
internationally recognized philanthropy and community involvement programs. O’Farrell was the
innovative architect of the Applied Materials Education Initiative. Developed to be a national model for
effective business engagement in education, the initiative has received numerous awards, as well as inquiries
from other companies interested in the factors contributing to its success. He received his Bachelor of
Science degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley and his MBA from Golden
Gate University.
Dr. John Porter is the current
superintendent of the Franklin McKinley School District. Before assuming his role as superintendent, he
was the Director of America’s Choice School Design: High Schools Division at the National Center on
Education and the Economy, a nonprofit organization that works at improving educational and human resource
institutions. Porter has also taken the role as superintendent for Ridgewood Public Schools and Oroville
Union High School District. As a former teacher, principal, Director of curriculum and instruction,
education consultant and his various superintendent positions, Porter has an excellent perspective on current
education needs and priorities. Dr. Porter received a bachelor’s degree from Occidental College, a
masters from California State University, Fullerton and an Ed.D from University of La Verne.

Raymond Bingham has had a distinguished career spanning more than 30
years in industries including high tech, chemical engineering and hospitality,
with accomplishments in global trade, mergers and acquisitions and building
businesses in developing countries. He also has a lengthy history of community
involvement with a focus on education. Both of Bingham's parents were teachers
and Ray understands the value of creating an environment for learning that is
so often missing in the homes of urban children. Bingham is the former Chairman
and CEO of Cadence Design Systems and serves as a member of the board of directors
of Oracle, Freescale Semiconductor, KLA Tencor, Flextronics and the San Jose
Education Foundation. In 2005, Bingham was honored with the Pioneers and Purpose
Award from the Franklin McKinley Education Foundation. Bingham received a B.S.
with Honors in Economics from Weber State University and holds a MBA from Harvard
Business School.
Jorge Ruiz de Velasco J.D., Ph.D. currently
serves as the co-director of the Institute for Research on Education Policy and Practice at Stanford
University. His impressive career has centered on issues concerning underprivileged students, education
reform, civil rights and immigration effects on society. Ruiz de Velasco has also served as Senior
Program Officer for Youth Programs at the James Irvine Foundation, Education Program Officer at The William and
Flora Hewlett Foundation, Senior Research Associate at The Urban Institute in Washington DC and as a policy
analyst and lawyer for the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights. Ruiz de Velasco
received an A.B., cum laude, in Government from Harvard University, a J.D. from the Boalt Hall School of Law at
UC Berkeley, an M.A. in Education Administration and Policy Analysis, a Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford
University and he is also a member of the California Bar.
Senator
Joe Simitian represents California's 11th Senate District, which includes
parts of San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz counties. Amongst his
various leadership positions, he currently serves as Co-Chair of the Housing
Leadership Council for the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group and on the Board
of Directors for the American Leadership Forum- Silicon Valley. His extensive
public service has included working as County Supervisor for Santa Clara County,
President of the Santa Clara County School Boards' Association and as an Assemblymember
of the California State Assembly. Simitian received his B.A., cum laude,
from Colorado College, his M.A. in International Policy Studies from Stanford
University, a Master of City Planning from UC Berkeley and a J.D. from the Boalt
Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley. Simitian is also a member of the California
Bar and the American Planning Association.
Ted
Mitchell, Ph.D., is the current CEO of NewSchools Venture Fund which
aims to improve public education for urban communities through entrepreneurship.
He also serves as the chair of the Governor's Committee on Educational Excellence,
the committee that requested the California School Finance Research Studies:
"Getting Down to Facts". Before his role at NewSchools, Mitchell
was the president of Occidental College, deputy to the president at Stanford
University and vice chancellor at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Mitchell earned a B.A. in Economics and History, M.A. in History and a Ph.D.
in Education, all from Stanford University.

This forum will feature expert panelists on a series of studies
conducted by Stanford University. The studies are designed to
provide California’s policymakers and education stakeholders with
comprehensive information about the state’s school finance and governance

the barriers and opportunities for regional partners to collaborate with local schools to improve and enhance
programs. Three panels of experts will discuss CTE state wide issues, the current status of CTE in San
José and generate ideas and policy recommendations to encourage CTE.
