Stepping Up To Algebra Corporate Volunteer Program

Corporate Volunteer Description: Stepping up to Algebra (SUTA) Program

The Silicon Valley Education Foundation and its partners are working to improve education through the Stepping up to Algebra Program (SUTA). Corporate volunteers are needed in the SUTA classroom during June and July of 2010. Now is your chance to make a difference for students!

Algebra I in middle school is considered a “gatekeeper” course for college admissions. Students must pass Algebra to graduate from high school and meet UC and CSU college requirements. Stepping up to Algebra (SUTA) is a summer school program that allows students to move ahead one full grade level in math. The SUTA program offered by the Silicon Valley Education Foundation is unique. It brings together the content expertise of school curriculum experts with the practical business expertise of a leading Silicon Valley firm.

If you are passionate about public education, now is your opportunity to make a direct impact on students by serving as a corporate volunteer in the classroom.

Responsibilities:

  • Tutor/Classroom Aide:

Provide one-on-one or small group assistance. Students benefit when more adults are in the classroom allowing the teacher to spend more focused time with specific students while you work with others. The teacher will work to integrate your expertise and assistance into the learning program.
  • Presentation:

Make a presentation to the class about how math is used in your everyday work. Students often ask, “How will I ever use math in the real world?” Your presentation will demonstrate the relevance of learning math.
  • Role Model:

Serve as a role model. You will model an “I did it, you can do it, too” attitude that encourages students to look toward academic success, and attending college.
  • If these are things that you are interested in doing to help this summer then please read the volunteer requirements. Please note that this program is open to adult volunteers only.

Requirements

  • Passion to help students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds understand the importance of math in career and life.
