Our 2019 Honoree, Dr. José Moreno Hernández, is a former astronaut and American engineer. Dr. Hernández is a true inspiration for the youth SVEF serves, having persistently applied to NASA eleven times before becoming the first Hispanic-American chosen to travel into space. Born in French Camp, CA and growing up in Stockton, his family originally immigrated from La Piedad, Michoacán in Mexico.  As a child he worked alongside his family and other farm workers, attending many different schools and learning to speak English at the age of 12. After participating in Upward Bound during high school, he attended college where he was involved in the MESA program which supports disadvantaged students seeking four-year STEM degrees. SVEF is thrilled to welcome Dr. Hernández as a shining example for the youth we serve.

Our 2019 Guest Emcee, Damian Trujillo, has been a NBC Bay Area News reporter, host and producer of “Comunidad Del Valle” since 1996. He has been honored by the Associated Press and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, among others, and is a five-time Emmy Award nominee. After growing up in Greenfield and working in the agricultural fields of the Salinas Valley during high school, Mr. Trujillo now honors his first job on the Cesar Chavez Holiday by making and distributing sack lunches for hundreds of South Bay farm workers. His family also awards a college scholarship to the son or daughter of a Greenfield farm worker each year. SVEF is delighted to welcome this Bay Area leader to our stage for the 2019 DreamMakers Dinner.
