Elevate [Math] College Mentor

POSITION SUMMARY

Since 2008, Silicon Valley Education Foundation (SVEF) has partnered with school districts to deliver Elevate [Math], a summer program that prepares 3rd-10th grade students for success in their next math course. Our mission is to deliver and advocate for equitable STEM education that inspires and prepares students for college and careers.

As a College Mentor, you’ll be essential to students’ and teachers’ success in Elevate [Math]. You’ll support students with math instruction, lead College Readiness lessons, help with classroom logistics, and inspire students. We host classes all throughout the Bay Area and will assign you a school based on your location preferences.

LOCATION & WORK SCHEDULE

Locations are across the Greater Bay Area, matching your preferences as indicated in your application.

Partner districts heavily concentrated in the San Jose area, with Programs as far north as San Leandro, San Francisco, and south into Soledad and Gilroy.


The program's specific dates vary by district, starting in early/mid June and concluding between July and August, which will be finalized before PL in mid-May

Classes run for an average of 3.5-4.5 hours a day, 4-5 days a week, depending on partner district requirements. Times can vary slightly by district needs.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support 2-5 Elevate [Math] classrooms with math instruction, college readiness activities, and logistical needs

  • Serve as a mentor and positive role model for students

  • Deliver 4-6 college readiness lessons per assigned classroom, as time permits

  • Serve as a math mentor by helping students navigate curriculum, solving problems collaboratively, and ensuring their feel supported in the Elevate [Math] Program

  • Offer administrative support, including calling parents and recording student attendance

  • Reinforce classroom norms and support group discussions

  • Engage with students through questioning during pair-share or small group sessions

  • Provide IT support to teachers, students, and families (Zoom, Google Classroom, Nearpod)

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Currently enrolled in college or a recent college graduate

  • Past experience working with 3rd-10th grade students in an academic setting preferred

  • Demonstrated proficiency in written, verbal, and digital communication

  • Ability to deliver SVEF-provided college readiness curriculum to a classroom of up to 25 students

  • Capability to work independently and collaboratively in a classroom setting

  • Required proof of TB test results and fingerprinting before working with students (costs reimbursed by SVEF). District-specific fingerprinting may be required

  •  Access to reliable transportation

COMPENSATION

Elementary & Middle & High School Programs (19 class days + 3 training days): salary of

$2,552 ($116 daily rate)

Longer High School Programs (24 class days + 3 training days): salary of $3,915 ($145 daily rate)

* Partner District program lengths may vary. Full compensation covers participation in all PL and PLC dates, daily classroom commitment, out-of-class preparation, and logistical responsibilities. Payroll taxes apply. There is no overtime and a cap of 8 working hours per day. Program length can vary depending upon district assignment. SVEF is committed to be in compliance with federal and state of California pay and benefit laws including minimum wage pay, benefits and breaks.

Referral Bonus: Receive a $50 bonus as a referral bonus when both you and your referred

College Mentor complete the Summer Program.
