This April, all 49ers STEM Leadership Institute students from both middle and high school were invited to attend a one-of-a-kind Career Day at Levi’s Stadium. The 49ers EDU team arranged this day-long event, tailoring it specifically for SLI students’ passions and career goals. In December, students filled out surveys, describing their interests, their possible future plans, and their knowledge of Levi’s Stadium staff, giving the 49ers EDU team and SLI staff the information that they needed to create an engaging and meaningful day of speakers.
The morning of the event, Dr. York spoke to the students, laying out his hopes for the day and the reasons that he and Silicon Valley Education Foundation had for establishing the 49ers STEM Leadership Institute. He was thrilled to see how the program has expanded and the students have grown since the opening in 2014.
With unprecedented access to areas of Levi’s Stadium, Students traveled throughout the grounds, listening to and talking with speakers whose jobs involved the stadium and 49ers. Speakers included the 49ers’ Head Athletic Trainer, the Senior Vice President of Stadium Operations, the Founder and CEO of VenueNext, Stadium Engineer, Graphic Designer, Video Producer, and various staff from the 49ers EDU team. While each presentation and ensuing discussion was unique, the presenters talked about their experience and how they got to where they are now.
One 8th grader described the day, saying “I got to learn that there are a lot more fields out there to explore than the ones I know and that I may think something’s right for me now but later find something better.” A 9th grader said “It reassured me that there are so many jobs out there and many of them are unconventional, but rewarding.”
Overall, it was a thought-provoking, informative day for the students. Thank you for the 49ers and Levi’s Stadium for hosting SLI.
